Uganda is a small country in East Africa that is home to more than 30,000,000 people. Like most African countries, it has been affected by war, poverty, and disease. Nearly 50% of the population is under the age of 18 and more than 50% of the population live on less than one dollar per day. According to the Ministry of Health, more than 350 people die in Uganda every day from preventable diseases such as malaria.

Maureen lives in a small village about five kilometres northeast of Jinja. Her father had an operation on his eyes and is not able to work. Her mother makes money by digging for people in their gardens, but she does not make enough money to always pay school fees. Because of this, all of Maureen’s four older siblings never completed their primary education.
