“Pick A Brick” Appeal
You can purchase a “BRICK” – one chunk of operational costs that will ensure that every dollar of Sponsorship Donations goes directly to the children and their families. Our goal is to have all administrative costs covered through donations separate from the Sponsorship Program.
Each ‘Brick’ will cover one month’s expenses in a particular category, from wages to food (As a volunteer, Kimi receives no salary). Consider purchasing one brick or a whole wall to cover the entire year.
WE PRAISE the LORD!!
All administrative expenses have been covered through our January Fundraiser and Silent Auction, and specific individual donations.
THANK YOU to ALL!!

This is home to Kimi, Christine and an assortment of cockroaches, bats and rats as well as “Clooney”, her protective puppy. We’re thankful to have such a spacious home with a garage large enough to accommodate 10 sewing machines and the laughter of 10 women who are learning valuable tailoring skills.
The grounds are also large enough to entertain hundreds of sponsored children and their guardians.

$400 for one month’s FOOD & HOUSEHOLD SUPPLIES
.

This fish represents food. But fish is normally too expensive and a little too fishy to enjoy, at least for some of the visitors to the house.
Usually bland food provides the basis of nutrition, foods like posho, a kind of boiled corn flour, or matooke, a mashed up form of green banana (of the unsweetened variety). At best, the diet features rice, cabbage and the ubiquitos beans. It’s a diet short on meat and fruit.

$110 for one month’s SALARY for “Uncle” EMAN Semalulu
.

Eman is a 37 year old Uganda and father of five children. He also provides for 8 other children from his extended family.
This picture catches him gnawing on a leg of chicken as he propels our rented car through the crowded roads of Uganda. He not only loves chicken when available, but is a Coca-Cola fan. His services to HHU are invaluable and include driving and setting up business contacts for purchases.

$100 for one month’s PHONE, INTERNET & COPYING
.

This is Johnny’s Grandmother, thankful for the support of Canadians. She’s also received a goat through the ministry of HHU.
Mobile phones cost less in Uganda than in Canada and a long distance call via Skype from Cranbrook is just 17 cents/minute but the Internet is costly, slow, often frustrating and always appreciated.
Then there are all of the other costs to photocopy report cards for every child and forms for various licenses.

$60 for one month’s TRANSPORTATION

These are the trusty ‘Boda-boda’s’ that seem to be sitting at every corner. They’re absolutely essential to getting around in Uganda, especially because car hire is so expensive.
One motorbike can haul two or three adult passengers, complete with chickens or goats or a mattress.
These funds will be used for fuel, licensing and maintenance of our vehicle as well as for rental of local bus and car hire into Jinja to fit, for instance 90 children with shoes.

$50 for one month’s UTILITIES
.

This is Zainabu, one of 92 children now enrolled in schools. Without the generosity of her Canadian sponsors, she would not likely have the opportunity for schooling.
Utilities include the power which is known to be somewhat erratic but nonetheless, invaluable for keeping Kimi’s insulin cold in the fridge and keeping the fans moving the air in the heat of the evening.
We’re thankful for the power that is available.

WE PURCHASED a USED VEHICLE!!!
This photo shows the inside of a “Coaster Bus” (pronounced ‘Ko-sta’) into which Ugandans can cram up to 22 perspiring bodies. Amazing!
Hiring a car or bus and getting its tanks fueled for the 2 1/2 hour drive to Entebbe airport or the 2 hour drive to the capital city of Kampala is rather costly, but . . .
We purchased a 1990 Toyota Landcruiser!!
Cost of the vehicle: about $7500. WHAT a BLESSING!
