Uganda is a small country in East Africa that is home to more than 30,000,000 people. Like most African countries, it has been affected by war, poverty, and disease. Nearly 50% of the population is under the age of 18 and more than 50% of the population live on less than one dollar per day. According to the Ministry of Health, more than 350 people die in Uganda every day from preventable diseases such as malaria.

Sharifa lives in a small village about five kilometres northeast of Jinja. Both of her parents are still alive but her mother does not have a job and her father is 72 years old and cannot work because he lost one of his legs. Sharifa’s parents cannot afford to pay school fees for all their children.
